Paris, November 1989: Aimée Leduc is going through a rough patch. A freshman at a cutthroat medical college, she is faced with suspension when someone sabotages one of her final projects. She's just discovered that her boyfriend, Florent, is getting engaged to another woman-an aristocrat like himself. And on top of that, Aimée's father has left town on a sudden mysterious business trip, and has asked her to look after the office in his absence - as if she didn't have enough else to do. In spite of (or perhaps because of) these obstacles, Aimée volunteers to take on a case her father doesn't want - one involving a distant relative. 76-year-old Bruno Peltier has been shot in the back of the head, execution-style, on a quai by the Seine. One of the only scraps of evidence on his body is the number of a young woman at an escort club.
