Abstract: Callie determines from an early age not to follow in her beloved mother's footsteps. Having married into a fishing family near Hartlepool, her mother's life has been nothing but hard work, unrelenting poverty and narrow horizons. Whilst gathering sea coal at the water's edge, Callie happens to meet Patricia Lazarus and her brother James. Though their backgrounds are very different, a friendship is formed that will last forever. When the Lazarus's great uncle offers Callie the post of companion to Patricia, she realises that this could be the first step in her journey to a better life...
