'Migrants' by Jean Hyland is based on the story of James and Cecilia Hyland. See Wigan Observer 20 March 1863, 'On Wednesday last Richard Cooper, Esq., the commissioner from the Government Emigration Board, attended at the Town Hall to receive applications and to examine the candidates for emigration to New Zealand, the cost of passage being defrayed out of a sum of £5,000 voted for such purpose by the government of the province of Canterbury, New Zealand, the intention being to relieve the distressed cotton districts of Lancashire and Cheshire of such of their population as, being out of work, might be desirous of leaving this country...Of the married couples who made application only two came within the commissioner's regulations and these were John Crabtree of High Street, Wigan-Lane, aged 35 and his wife Jane, aged 31 – they had no children; and James Hyland of 2 Brook Street, Poolstock, and his wife Cecilia and their two children age 1 two years and 1 the other eleven months...'
