This saga follows twins Tanwen and Donna. Tanwen is pretty, a bubbly extrovert but very selfish and egotistical. Donna is shy, plain, but warm-hearted and compliant. In 1924 when the girls are 14 their mother insists both girls become apprentices at The Cardiff Drapers, where Tanwen soon becomes pregnant.
