Crippled by polio, young Winnie Molloy has little to look forward to. Her father adores her but she is neglected by her mother. When war comes, her father is called up and Winnie is left with her mother. But soon her father is killed and her mother meets with an accident and dies. Little Winnie is then sent to an orphanage.
